Fashion lovers look away now – your favourite pair of super skinnies could be causing you back and posture problems.
Chiropractors have issued a stark warning that some of our top wardrobe choices may actually be detrimental to our health, including skinny jeans, hooded jackets and this season’s hottest shoe, the mule.
“I am always surprised at how many of my patients are unaware that their clothing and accessories can affect their back health and their posture, and equally how many decide their outfit choice outweighs their pain,” British Chiropractic Association (BCA) chiropractor Tim Hutchful commented.
“Some of the most popular items of clothing can have a hidden health impact.”
In a survey conducted by the BCA, out of the 1,062 women questioned it was found that 73 per cent had suffered back pain. When further quizzed, 28 per cent admitted they were aware clothing could affect their back, neck and posture, but 33 per cent said they didn’t know that was the case.
The experts condemned skinny jeans for putting added pressure on the back and joints because they restrict the movement of the knees and hips. Oversized hoods were slammed for forcing wearers to crane their necks to see and backless shoes lead to women holding their body in unnatural positions which causes tension in the spine.
The spotlight was also shone on asymmetric dresses and skirts, which restrict movement and force knees together, oversized bags and jewellery, which put extra pressure on the neck, and oversized sleeves that alter the way you hold your arms.
“Whilst we are certainly not saying stop wearing your favourite clothes altogether, like most things in life, moderation is best and there are easy ways you can reduce the impact on your posture and overall health,” Tim advised.
